Today began a three day rotation with our team divided into three groups. One group was at construction all day working on the five meter tall retaining wall at Ana’s house. A second group did VBS at the Villa Linda Miller School in the morning and was available to the community’s children for the afternoon. Finally, a third group did street ministry in the market, visited the dump to distribute water and food and then visited the school at AFE all before joining the construction group for the remainder of the day.
Following dinner at Micah some of the team joined Brian Wiggs at the church down the street from Micah for a young men’s discipleship group led by Brian and one of the Micah staff. The core group, fifteen young men in total, come from the surrounding neighborhood. Some are part of the Micah Tech program while others have found their way to this weekly time through various contacts with Micah. Two members of our team got to share their own stories of God’s work in their lives.
One of the young men there was Marlon, a member of the Micah Tech program. Some of us first met Marlon a year ago on the last trip to Honduras. We also got to spend time with this tireless worker at the construction site today. If you’d seen Marlon a year ago you’d immediately notice the change in his size and stature. He has gotten bigger and stronger. More importantly, though, if you’d known Marlon four years ago you’d immediately notice the difference between this young man who now loves Jesus and who tells others about Him and the Marlon who four years ago was a gangster involved with drugs. In Marlon’s transformed life we see again that God is building His church one forgiven and new life at a time – kind of like the team’s work on Ana’s retaining wall; one big rock at a time. (1 Peter 2:4-5 NIV “As you come to Him, the living Stone – rejected by men, but chosen by God and precious to Him – you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. “)
